Enumclaw Welcome Center

Background

The people of Enumclaw and the surrounding plateau have always enjoyed the pastoral views of the foothills of the Cascades and the dominating landform known as Mount Rainier. Along with this setting comes a level of responsibility for stewardship of the forests and natural features that are part of our public lands such as Mount Rainier National Park and Mount Baker- Snoqualmie National Forest. As part of this stewardship, the residents of Enumclaw and the White River Valley to the east successfully obtained designation of the State Route 410 highway corridor from Enumclaw over Chinook Pass to Naches as a federally designated "Scenic Byway."

The designation of SR 410 as a scenic byway enabled the City of Enumclaw to secure federal funding for a gateway project in the form of a welcome/interpretive center.   The Welcome Center will house staff from the National Forest Service, National Park Service and the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce.  In addition to staff space, the Welcome Center will provide travelers and local residences alike an opportunity through interactive interpretive displays to learn about the history of the Enumclaw Plateau, nearby federal forest and park lands, and the recreational opportunities found there.

The welcome center is to be located on the eastern edge of the City of Enumclaw, next to the Fieldhouse at the Enumclaw Expo Center.  The City, along with the other agencies, have been working to develop and build the Center.  In November, 2007, the project's architect, Otak, Inc., finished a draft of the conceptual building and site design.  Construction of the Welcome Center is anticipated to begin in 2009.
