City Business License FAQ

Q: DO I NEED A BUSINESS LICENSE FROM THE CITY OF ENUMCLAW?

A: If your business is located inside the City limits of Enumclaw, you will need an Enumclaw City Business License.

A general rule to determine if an address is inside or outside the City limits is: All streets with a name or a 3-4 digit address are inside City limits, and all streets with a number or a 5 digit address are outside City limits.

You do not need an Enumclaw City Business License if you are coming into the City for business transactions.  The exceptions are mobile vendors and solicitors who do need a specialized City business license.

A Business License can be obtained (along with building permits) from the City's Community Development Department at 1309 Myrtle Street, Enumclaw.  Phone: (360) 825-3593.

Q: ARE THERE ANY OTHER LICENSES I WILL NEED FOR MY BUSINESS?

A: Yes, you must have a State of WA Master Business License and a Unified Business Identification (UBI) number from the State of Washington before you can apply for a City Business License. A WA State Business License registers your business for the State of WA. A UBI number, sometimes called a State Tax ID Number, is a identification number the State issues to identify businesses for tax purposes. The Dept of Revenue issues this number when you apply for a State of Washington Master Business License. The WA Master Business License fee is $20.00. Contact the Department of Revenue office nearest you to obtain a Master Business or for more information.

You may need other types of licenses pertaining to your business from other agencies; for example, a Day-Care business would need a Day-Care license from the State of Washington

Additional City of Enumclaw Specialized licenses are required for some business activities. (see Question 2. for list of Specialized licenses).

Q: HOW DO I APPLY FOR A CITY BUSINESS LICENSE?

A: You can obtain a City Business License Application form via this website here or at the Community Development Department at 1309 Myrtle Street, Enumclaw.  Phone: (360) 825-3593. After completing the application form, you submit the form and the appropriate application fee (check is made out to "City of Enumclaw") to Community Development.

Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE THE CITY TO PROCESS THE BUSINESS LICENSE APPLICATION?

A: It takes about two to three weeks to process the licenses. The Fire Department, Police Department, the Community Development Department all review the application. When the license is approved, it will be mailed to you along with parking, signage and zoning information.

Q: WHAT OTHER REQUIREMENTS ARE THERE FOR MY BUSINESS?

A: Before you apply for a City Business License, we encourage you to contact the Planning Division of Community Development Department to inquire about any zoning districts, sign requirements, parking restrictions, or building permits that may apply to your business. If your place of business has a burglary and/or robbery alarm, you must provide the Police Department with emergency contact information and a list of persons authorized to enter the premise and shut-off the alarm. Depending on the type of business, a Knox Box may be required by the Fire Department. This device allows for quick entry in the event of an emergency. Home Occupations are not subject to this code.
