Janet Berthon Artist Statement

I have had a life-long fascination with the arts.  During my teaching career, I realized my favorite subject to teach my elementary students was art.  I studied at the University of Washington, earning a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in art.  This allowed me to explore a wide range of arts and crafts mediums, techniques and methods. From 1996 to 1999, I taught art at Rainier Middle School.  My philosophy was, busy hands are happy hands.  Much of my curriculum was craft-based.  We explored all mediums, collage, wire sculpture, ceramics, batik, weaving, and we used plaster of Paris strips to make face masks, and of course, we did some drawing and painting in watercolor and acrylic.  I have continued to take art classes, keeping my hands busy and my mind occupied in creative processes. Following my retirement from teaching in 1999, I joined classes offered by the Frye Art Museum, learning to draw and paint with oils and watercolor, slump glass and carve stone.  I also studied stone carving with Sabah Al-Dhaher at the Prat Fine Arts Center in Seattle.  And I have continued exploring and creating in whatever medium interests me. I have exhibited sculpture and painting at Art in the Garden, Enumclaw Art Walks, Arts Alive, the City of Enumclaw Exhibit Space, and at the King County Fair BaseCamp Exhibit from 2003 through 2009.
